One style tribe would be the hippies. The hippies didn’t “fit in” with the middle social class people so they kind of created their own group and style. They thought the middle class was dominated by materialism so hippies weren’t. They were very eco-friendly and care free which could be seen through the tie-dye and bright clothing pieces they wore.

Another style tribe would be the preppies. They wore clothing that showed their status and money. Usually this group consisted of kids who had wealthy parents. This group would wear name brand clothing items that were clean cut. Their clothing were not crazy colors either but it was known that they were part of the preppy tribe by what name brand clothing they wore.

I think a style tribe today would be the clothing that originated in the 70s-80s. A lot of clothing pieces today were very popular back then. For example, mom jeans are becoming more and more popular again. For awhile, skinny jeans were really the only thing most people would wear but now it is common to see people wearing mom jeans again.

One of my favorite trends we talked about this semester would be how people dressed in 1960-1970. I like how bright and fun the colors of the clothes are and I feel like it would have been super fun to live during this time period and wear these clothes. Some of the trends from the late 20th century having been coming back today which I think is super cool because some of the clothing during that time period is actually kind of trendy.

Late 20th Century Morgue

This is an example of clothing that was worn in 1960. Skirts and dresses still were pretty modest.

There was a major dress reform in the late 19th century. This reform was very historic for women in which they were finally treated fairly and became active participants in society. This reform stemmed from the Progressive Era and during that era feminism became a much popular topic.

This lead to more active clothing rather than all the types of clothing that made them look pretty. It became known that corsets were dangerous for women to wear and doctors were supporting this reform as well. Some doctors said that women should only be wearing no more than 6.5 pounds of undergarments compared to the typical 13 pounds that they would wear in earlier years. More activewear was made for women as well rather than the typical “pretty” dress so women could be more active. Their clothing was still modest, though, and covered their legs.

Beau Brummel was kind of known as the trend setter in the 19th century. He started the trend for men to wear understated clothes but they were exquisite clothes. He is credited for introducing the suit and tie which is now worn throughout the world by millions of people. Beau Brummel in a way broke clothing norms and created pieces that weren’t really worn during that time period.

I think there are many people who could be considered a modern Beau Brummel. I think it is different for every person, though. I think it depends on the person because some of the trends there are now I know I would never wear, like biker shorts for example. I think the “famous” people that you watch and look up to can have an impact on your style. For me, I think Emma Chamberlain has had an influence on my style since I have started watching videos she posts a lot more. A lot of the things she wears I’ve started to buy for myself too. I think that every person can have someone they are inspired from for fashion.

I bought Air Force Ones and have started wearing “mom jeans” more because that is often what Emma would wear.

This is what was worn underneath women’s dresses to make their gown appear wide.

This is an image of a Mantua. These dresses are much more narrow compared to the previous images and are much easier to walk around in. Some women would wear these over the dresses that were extremely wide.

17th Century Morgue

This is an example of the types of hair pieces and dresses women would wear during this time period. Jewelry was really only used to enhance what they were wearing.

This is an example of pieces of clothing people would wear during this time period. They wore crazy pieces around their necks as shown above.

This is another example of the clothing style during this time period. Headpieces are less common. These people were probably people of higher class due to the material their clothing is made of.

Puritans were a more simplistic group. They didn’t wear clothing that had fluff, feathers, and fur and they stayed away from bright, vibrant colors. Most of the clothing they wore was black and didn’t have much, if any, decoration on it. They believed that simple clothing showed you had a pure heart. The Puritan’s clothing styles mimicked their views that the church shouldn’t be decorated elaborately with different things such as shrines and statues and they were not in favor with the Church of England. They preferred a more natural, bland look which was also shown in the clothes they wore.

On the other hand, royalists were completely different and they loved flashy colors along with fluff, feathers, and fur. Generally they wore the same clothing pieces as the puritans but there was much more color and flashy pieces. A lot of their clothing had feathers or fur and jewels. Royalists were in favor with the Church of England which can explain their clothing choices because the church was decorated lavishly.
